The project of the Skitnica Association aimed to teach children how to safely interact with dogs, understand their needs, and recognize the importance of responsible ownership. Through workshops and practical examples, children gained knowledge about proper handling, preventing abandonment, and developing compassion for animals.
The activities included transportation, refreshments, and the distribution of gift packages for 40 children from four elementary schools in Kakanj. The main goal was to raise awareness about safety and responsible dog ownership.
We want to encourage citizens to become responsible owners and together reduce the number of abandoned dogs on the streets of Kakanj. Sterilization is a key step towards a more humane treatment of animals and the creation of a safer, healthier environment. Through partnerships with local organizations and institutions, we have enabled all dog owners to take part in solving this problem, sending a clear message that caring for animals means caring for the community. With this, we show that Kakanj can be an example of a town that builds a more humane society.
Visitors enjoyed taking photos with Santa Claus, elves, and our dogs, while developing love and respect for animals through socializing. A special value of the workshop was the opportunity to adopt dogs who were ready for their forever homes, making the event a blend of fun, compassion, and the warmth of the holiday spirit.
The problem of stray dogs in Kakanj has been present for years, and their number continues to grow, which particularly affects the sense of safety among children and citizens. Since there is no shelter in the town for the humane care of abandoned dogs, the Animal Protection Association Skitnica Kakanj launched the project “Responsible Ownership – A Community Without Strays” with the aim of creating a safer and more humane environment for everyone.
As part of World Cleanup Day 2022, the Let’s Do It BiH team and the Alternative Kakanj Association organized a cleanup action in Kakanj. At two locations – Varda and Kraljeva Sutjeska – 74 volunteers gathered who, despite the rain and the postponement of one activity, managed to clean the area of the Partisan Memorial Cemetery and part of the road along the Bukovica River. This initiative, as part of a global movement that brings together volunteers from 191 countries, aims to raise ecological awareness and create a healthier environment.
